I asked Charity (my wife and all around wizard of online presence) to build me this site several weeks ago, but am just now getting around to really setting it up. However, I have been using the “browndogtech.com” domain that we registered for the site in several projects all along, and have had many people ask me “What is BrownDog Tech?” and “Who is BrownDog?”. Both are very good questions that I figured were a good use of the first post on the site.
First… “What is BrownDog Tech?”
It really comes down to the idea that I wanted a place to share some of the interesting things related to all different kinds of technology that I spend time on these days so I don’t forget something. Frankly, even if I’m the only one who ever comes to this site to read a post on how I set up my laptop as a development environment, or how to build an Internet Connected Christmas Tree with an Arduino, a couple relays, and a wifi card, I’ll still call it a success. Because the fact is that I often find myself scratching my head trying to re-do something I spent a couple days working on six months ago, and kicking myself that I didn’t take 5 minutes to write down the instructions as a reminder.
So, What is BrownDog Tech? It’s a place for me to make notes on different projects that I’m spending time on. Some of them might be closely related to my day job at Cisco, others will be about my ongoing efforts at building “Digital House”, and still others will be about what I’ve learned working on another family project, FunFactswithAlex.com, a site where my son shares interesting facts he picks up as he explores the world.
And Second… “Who is BrownDog?”
When my son was born, he received many, many, many toys and stuffed animals in his first few days. One of them is a small, brown stuffed dog with a rattle in his butt. That little BrownDog has been his most prized possession since the day he was born. BrownDog has traveled the world with the Prestons, and even had a few adventures on his own (we really try to avoid those). So, when I was kicking around different names for this little site, Alex and BrownDog were sitting next to me watching a movie, and inspiration hit and “BrownDog Tech” was born.
